Mekarmaju Village: Rise Through Strengthening Tradition and Innovation

Desa Mekarmaju, located in Pasirjambu District, Bandung Regency, continues to demonstrate its commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of blacksmithing and the art of maranggi that has been passed down for generations. Through a community service program implemented by Telkom University, the village received support to improve production efficiency and strengthen production management as a step towards economic and cultural sustainability.
This activity began with a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on July 4, 2024, involving blacksmith craftsmen, village officials, and local community leaders. The discussion identified various challenges, such as the lack of implementation of work safety principles and the lack of coordination between business groups. As a follow-up, on July 18, 2024, training and mentoring on production management were conducted, which included the implementation of OHS (Occupational Safety, Health, and Hygiene) and increased collaboration between artisan groups.
Observations during the program showed an urgent need to educate the community on the importance of using personal protective equipment (PPE) and managing a safer work environment. Interactive discussions and participatory approaches during the training encouraged communities to start adopting a new mindset that is more supportive of work safety and sustainability.
With the support of this program, Mekarmaju Village is expected to develop into a blacksmith production center that is not only superior in quality, but also responsible for the environment and public health. This program not only brings new hope to the craftsmen, but also opens up wider opportunities for the village to optimally utilize its tourism potential.
